What is World Youth Day (WYD)?
World Youth Day is a pilgrimage made by youths from all over the world together with The Pope. The Pope chooses a city for this gathering every two, three, or four years. WYD is a celebration of the Universal Church and our faith, and is an incredible experience for evangelization among youth. In August 2023, WYD will be held in Lisbon, Portugal.
Why World Youth Day?
WYD is a time of palpable unity within a truly global Church. It allows our youths to meet other Catholics from all over the world and empowers them to see that they are never alone in the faith — that they have brothers and sisters in Christ from every corner of the globe. WYD inspires such unity among peoples and nations from around the world. It inspires young people to find their vocation in marriage or consecrated life and creates a personal encounter with Jesus Christ.
In short, WYD changes lives.
What will our trip look like?
Our WYD 2023 group will spend two days in Fatima, the site of the Marian apparition.
We will then spend a week in Lisbon doing sight seeing, attending concerts and events, and spending time with young people from around the world.
We will end our pilgrimage at a Mass with Pope Francis and millions of fellow pilgrims.
Who is going, and how do I sign up?
Emilia Cowell, our director of Youth Ministry, will be taking a group of 10 students ages 16+ at the time of departure. College students are also welcome, and students age 14 and 15 can attend if accompanied by a parent.
If you are interested or have further questions, email Emilia Cowell at youthministrywayland@gmail.com
