Build The Kingdom: High School Ministry

Hello Families!

My name is Deacon Colm and I'm the Youth Minister here at Good Shepherd. There are opportunities for all 6th through 12th graders as we transition to confirming students when they are in 8th grade.

Confirmation 1 is for students in 9th grade (or above). Students participate in a 6-week block of classes in the Fall and then again in the Spring plus an overnight retreat in November.

Confirmation 2 (this year's 10th graders) students have completed confirmation 1 and attend six classes in the fall as well as the overnight retreat in November. They are then eligible to pparticipate in leadership which meets on Tuesday evenings.

In addition to classes, students are to earn 35 "building blocks" by attending a range of events with the parish. This can include summer trips, Bible study, or service with the parish. An hourlong event equals 5 building blocks. The idea is to show students a range of ways to live out their faith outside of a classroom setting. If this program sounds like a good fit for your family, feel free to email, Deacon Colm, for more information.

Mass Attendance

The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life. As such, weekly attendance at the Sunday Mass is the single most important thing we do as Catholics. At Mass we are reminded of our identity, through the sacred scriptures, and as we receive Christ’s very Self in the mystery of the sacrament of the Eucharist. With this in mind, we’ve incorporated Mass attendance as a fundamental component of our Faith Formation program this year.

Families will engage together in a Mass and will pick a role to participate in. For more information on the family-centered program Mass attendance requirement and details on how your family can participate contact Debora S. Robertson for grades K-5 or Deacon Colm for grades 6-12.

Leadership and Other Youth Ministry Events

So, what happens once you are Confirmed? Our youth ministry does not end there. All Confirmed high school students are invited to join our Leadership program. The Leadership team helps put on retreats for our Confirmation classes and meets throughout the year for ongoing faith and leadership formation. The LIFE nights which we have added this year for middle school students is also an excellent opportunity for Leadership. In addition, our bible studies, socials, trips and events are for all high school students. Not Catholic but curious about something we have going on? No problem! Everyone is welcome of any faith or level of belief.

All events are chaperoned by at least two adults who have passed background checks, taken safe environment training and agreed to uphold our code of conduct.
